Lionel Arthur Mitchell was born at Monaghan, Ireland on 11 April 1867 and qualified B.A. at Dublin in 1889 and M.B. in 1890. Made Surgeon Lieutenant in January 1892, he was advanced Surgeon Captain in January 1895. Mitchell served in the Operations on the Samana and in the Kurram Valley between August-September 1897. Thence on the Operations of the Flying Column in the Kurram Valley under Colonel Richardson between 20 August -1 October 1897. Mitchell shared in the capture of the Sampagha and Arbanga Passes and finally in the Bazar Valley from 25-30 December 1897. Promoted Major on 30 January 1904 and Lieutenant-Colonel on 14 July 1914, he served during the Great War on the Western Front from 19 August 1914.
Living at Avenida, Alexandra Road, South Farnborough, Hampshire the good Colonel died in January 1939.
