George Thomas Field was born on 17 March 1824 and became a Gentleman Cadet on 10 February 1840. Made 2nd Lieutenant on 11 January 1843 and Lieutenant on 30 October 1843, he saw service in Jamaica from June 1844-April 1846. Returned home, Field served from April-December 1851 in Canada before the outbreak of the Crimean War.
Promoted Captain, he shared in the siege and fall of Sebastopol and in the expedition in Kertch. Field was subsequently promoted to Brevet-Major on 20 December 1854. He served as Assistant Quartermaster-General in the Crimea between December 1855-June 1856 and then was Deputy Assistant Quartermaster-General at Woolwich. Field was appointed Acting Governor of the General Hospital at Woolwich from 1863-65 and during this time was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel on 7 April 1864. He became Second Commandant and Inspector at the Royal Military Academy Woolwich on 7 April 1869 and then made Superintendent Royal Carriage Department between 1871-76 and during this time was promoted Colonel on 21 June 1873. Field was appointed Colonel Commanding the Royal Artillery of the Northern District serving between 1877-81 and during this time was promoted to Major-General on 26 November 1880. Field was placed on the retired list on 16 December 1885 and given the honorary rank of Lieutenant-General. He originally retired to York but died after an illness at Canterbury, Kent on 30 August 1889.
