The campaign group of three to Officiating Assistant Adjutant General H. M. Garstin, Commanding Officer of the 42nd Regiment of Goorkha Light Infantry from 1861-65, late 36th Native Infantry, who was severely wounded at the action of Sadulapur during the Punjab Campaign and who died in service at Murree on 27 July 1867

Henry Murray Garstin was born at Meerut on 17 November 1826 and entered the Bengal Army in 1842, joining the 36th Native Infantry at Dinapore the following May. In the spring of 1845, Garstin went with the Regiment to Delhi and in the November he marched to Ambala. In January 1846, in consequence of the Sikh invasion, he moved with the Regiment to Ludhiana and shared in the Battle of Aliwal (Medal).

Thence proceeding with the Regiment to Jullunder, the following March he accompanied it to the foot of the hills on escort duty with the Governor-General, eventually returning to Ambala in April 1846. Adjutant to the Right Wing in November 1847, be was temporarily detached to Reh-ki-Pattan. During the Punjab campaign, Garstin shared in the of Ramnagar, the passage of the Chenab, the action of Sadulapur - in which he was severely wounded - the Battle of Chilianwala (on the day after which he was appointed acting Adjutant), and the Battle of Gujerat (Medal and 2 clasps).

In April 1849 he was again appointed to officiate as Adjutant, a position made permanent in June 1849. Towards the close of the same year he marched with the regiment to Meerut, where the crops (destined for Jullundur) was detained on escort duty with the Commander-in Chief. In January 1857, consequent on his promotion to the rank of Captain, he vacated the Adjutancy of the Regiment, being made Officiating Assistant Adjutant Quartermaster General of the Meerut Division on 4 March. On the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny in May 1857, he was attached to Army Head-Quarters as a Deputy Quartermaster General, and moving forward with the Delhi Field Force, he was, in that capacity, present at the action of Badli-ki-Serai, at the seizure of the Ridge, throughout the siege and capture of Delhi, and subsequently in the operations in the Gurgaon and Rewari districts (Medal and clasp, and promoted to the rank of Major by brevet).

Re-appointed to the Meerut Division in November 1857, he was appointed Commandant of the Arakan Battalion and joined this Corps at Akyab in April 1858, when he was appointed Commandant of the Arakan Battalion. In its command from April 1858-April 1861, he was appointed Commandant of the 1st Assam Light Infantry (styled shortly afterwards the 46th, and later in the same year, the 42nd Bengal Native Infantry). He held command of the 42nd Native Infantry until April 1865, when he went home on furlough.

Returned to India in December 1866, Garstin was made Officiating Assistant Adjutant General of the Peshawar Division and died at Murree on 27 July 1867.
