General Service 1962-2007, 1 clasp, Northern Ireland (L/Wren P L Hammond W132902V WRNS), very fine and scarce
A very small number of Women's Royal Naval Service personnel served in Northern Ireland during 'Op Banner'. In 1978, seven members of the WRNS were deployed to Northern Ireland, following a rigorous selection process where 200 applied, to support 47 Commando, Royal Marines, during their tour from May-November 1978. Their role, and those of their Women's Royal Army Corps colleagues, included working on intelligence duties and in undercover operations, acting as 'girlfriends' to undercover male counterparts on observation work.
