Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (Vety-Srgn J. Barker. 10th Hussars.) officially impressed, fitted with B. Bailey riband bar for wear, toned good very fine

John Barker enlisted and was appointed Veterinary Surgeon on 27 July 1855 with the 10th Hussars and served in the Crimean campaign from 17 August 1855, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol. He later served with the 7th Hussars in the Indian Mutiny between February 1858 - March 1859 where he was present at the repulse of the enemy's attack on the Alumbagh, the siege and capture of Lucknow, affair of Barree, and action of Nawabgunge, occupation of Fyazabad, passage of the Goomtee at Sultanpore, throughout the Byswarra campaign, including the affairs of Kandoo Nuddee and Hyderghur; also the Trans-Gogra campaign, including the affair near Churda and pursuit, taking the Fort of Meejeedia, attack on Bankee and pursuit to the Raptee, advance into Nepaul and affair at Sitkaghat. He is further entitled to a Turkish Crimea 1855 medal and entitled to an Indian Mutiny medal with Lucknow clasp. Barker became Veterinary Surgeon of the First Class on 29 July 1862 and retired on 15 May 1866.

A total of 49 Veterinary Surgeons served in the Crimea and 35 served during the Indian Mutiny. Numbers were made up by appointing civilian veterinary surgeons as temporary Officers. All temporary Officers were gazetted with the local rank of "Veterinary Surgeon in Turkey".
