The New Zealand Medal awarded to Surgeon Lieutenant-Colonel R. A. P. Grant, 43rd (Monmouthshire Light Infantry) Regiment of Foot, who was 'mentioned' for his gallantry in action on 28 July 1865, when going to the assistance of the mortally-wounded Captain Close

New Zealand 1845-66, reverse dated '1863 to 1866' (Assist. Surgeon R. A. P. Grant, 43rd Lt Infry.), with corresponding miniature award, good very fine

M.I.D. London Gazette 20 October 1865. Brought to the notice of the Colonel Commanding the District:

'...for the very zealous and efficient services rendered at an engagement on 28 July 1865 when he was exposed to a heavy fire under which he directed Captain Close who was mortally wounded to be carried under cover.'

Robert Alexander Peter Grant was born at Davlish, Devon on 13 December 1835 and qualified in 1855, being made Staff Assistant Surgeon in June 1859. Appointed Assistant Surgeon to the 43rd (Monmouthshire Light Infantry) Regiment of Foot in October 1860, from 8 October 1863-6 July 1866 he served in the New Zealand Wars with that unit. Following his act of gallantry which cost the life of Captain Arthur Close at Warea in Taranaki (Medal).

Retired Brigade Surgeon in Jue 1884, he held the medical charge of troops at Inverness until 1902 and died at Reay House, Inverness in May 1916.
