The Waterloo Medal awarded to Private D. Higgs, 28th Regiment of Foot, who was wounded in action at Bayonne in 1813, later seeing action at Waterloo where the Battalion distinguished themselves by being the only unit mentioned by name in Wellington's dispatch
Waterloo 1815 (Daniel Higgs, 28th Regiment Foot.), original steel clip and split ring suspension, minor contact wear, slight edge bruise, very fine
Daniel Higgs joined the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot from the Reserve on 25 June 1804 and appears on the Regimental muster with the depot the next month. The 28th had a distinguished record of service during the Napoleonic Wars, commencing with Egypt in 1801 (where the regiment earned their famous 'Back Badge') and subsequently participating in most of the battles of the Peninsular War. Higgs was one of their number and is noted on a roll for the Battle of Barrosa, additionally being listed as wounded in the right arm at Bayonne 13 December 1813 'when in action with the enemy'.
At the conclusion of the campaign Higgs remained in the regiment and was present at Quatre Bras and Waterloo in Captain Charles Tenion's Company. The 28th were in the thick of the fighting throughout both battles, taking significant casualties: in the Duke of Wellington's subsequent Waterloo Despatch, they were the only English infantry regiment to be specifically mentioned by name and were also immortalised in the magnificent painting 28th Regiment at Waterloo by Elizabeth Thompson, Lady Butler, in 1875.
Higgs was discharged on 5 February 1822 and did not live to claim Military General Service Medal; sold together with photocopies of the Adjutant's Roll for Waterloo and a Statement of Service.
