Auction: 26001 - Orders, Decorations and Medals
Lot: 24
Waterloo 1815, fitted with steel clip and ring suspension (Charles Pink, 1st Reg. Dragoon Guards.), fitted with a white metal mounting bar for wear, edge bruises and contact marks, otherwise very fine
Charles Pink was born at Preston Candover, near Basingstoke, Hampshire and was a labourer before he attested for the 1st King's Dragoon Guards on 5 August 1807. His service record confirms he spent one year in France and was present at the Battle of Waterloo and remained with the unit until July 1817.
He thence chose to re-enlist - this time into the 55th (Westmorland) Regiment of Foot - on 29 March 1818, and served with them at the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa for eight years, and in the East Indies from October 1830-May 1833. On his return home, he was sent to the General Hospital at Fort Pitt, Kent with an eye condition known as 'Common Opthalmic'. He was finally discharged on 10 September 1833 as a result of this issue, which considered him unfit for further service. As the 55th were not present at Waterloo, he must have been one of the few in its ranks to wear the Medal - undoubtedly with pride - and perhaps he enjoyed regaling his comrades with tales of daring-do from the fields of Belgium.
