Lanc: Regt.); Mayor of Kimberley’s Star 1899-1900, reverse with hallmark letter ‘a’ and top riband bar, mounted together with a fine souvenir brooch of the Siege itself, being a split and polished spent round, this engraved 'Kimberley Siege 1900', good very fine (3)
John James Green was born at Liverpool in 1876 and was a carter by trade upon his joining the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in August 1894. He served with the unit in South Africa in the Boer War from 1 February 1899-25 June 1902 (Queen's Medal & 3 clasps, King's Medal & 2 clasps, Silver Star). During that time his unit, at that time at half Battalion strength - and supported by a handful of Gunners, Sappers and Medical Staff - formed the only regular troops present during the famed Siege of Kimberley. He clearly saw plenty of action and came home with the affixed brooch to prove it.
Having been advanced Lance-Corporal, Green was released in August 1902 and re-engaged in June 1906. He was discharged for the final time in August 1910.
