Plantagenet Lords of Ireland, Prince John (1177-1199), Second Coinage, Round Halfpenny, c. 1185-1208, Type Ia, Dublin, Norman, + IOHANNES [DO]MIN :), inverted A and Ns and S reversed [the legend effectively punched inwards], diademed head facing with 'puffy' cheeks, rev. + NORMAN : ON [: DW]ELI, voided cross potent with annulets in angles, these dies likely amongst the first of the coinage, 0.71g, 8h (O'Sullivan [1964], dies 2/1 [Rodberd/Norman]; S.6204), some areas of striking weakness the result of die capping, with attractive bluish cabinet tone, a pleasingly bold very fine, an important die link in the Norman-Irish series

This coin is of interest because it establishes an obverse die link between Norman and Rodberd. The obverse die of this coin recorded by O'Sullivan with a Rodberd reverse, Norman and Rodberd were the principal moneyers who issued coins with the extended obverse inscription diagnostic of the earliest types.
