Lot: 2063
British Guiana
1850-51 "Cottonreels"
12c. black on indigo, Townsend Type A (Robson Lowe Type B), initialled "E.D.W.", cut to an octagonal shape, with the round frameline mostly intact, cancelled by Demerara double-arc d.s. for Nov. 14 1851. A central hole and minor thinning, which do not detract, as imperfections are common among the few surviving examples. The rarest shade of the 12 cents, with only eleven recorded examples according to Townsend; this particular stamp holds the additional distinction of bearing a Demerara datestamp, whereas most surviving examples feature a Berbice cancellation. B.P.A. Certificate (1995). S.G. 6II, £14,000. Photo
