James Morrisy was born in Sheffield and was a printer when he enlisted in the Manchester Regiment for service during the Great War at the age of 37. His attestation form lists 14 years previous experience with the 6th Battalion, Manchester Regiment. Entering the war in France on 7 November 1915, he served there until 23 February 1917 before being discharged from the 19th Battalion, Manchester Regiment on 10 August 1917 suffering from myalgia. At the time of his discharge he was living in Moss Side, Manchester.

Thomas Sumner enlisted in the 12th Battalion, Manchester Regiment and entered the war in France on 16 July 1915. While there he was a witness in a court of enquiry on 28 December 1915 held to consider the accidental shooting of Private J. Ross of the 12th Battalion. Sumner was killed in action on 1 March 1916 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial.

Sumner is further entitled to the 1914-15 Star and Victory Medal.
