William Edwin Trimming was born on 12 April 1886 at Farnham, Surrey and joined the Royal Navy on 29 August 1906. Completing his first service on 28 August 1911 he transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve at Portsmouth. He re-enlisted on 2 August 1914 serving with Hermione from 18 August 1914 before removing to Canada in August 1915.

He was still with her when she took part in the Battle of Jutland in 1916, when she sailed with Beatty's Grand Fleet and fired 42 rounds from her 14-inch guns and 109 6-inch shells. Transferring to the Royal Fleet Reserve, Trimming served with Victory II from 9 April until 13 June 1920.
