Charles Percy Hopwood was born on 23 January 1899 at Alton, Hampshire and worked as a telegraph messenger before he attested on 26 February 1915 as a Boy 2nd Class. Posted to Duncan on 20 July 1915 he served with her largely in the Adriatic and the Aegean. Going ashore on 11 April 1917, Hopwood was posted to Blenheim on 1 September 1917, remaining among her complement until 11 April 1919. He continued to serve post-war, joining the crew of Arrogant on 4 August 1921, he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. on 17 February 1932 and was pensioned on 22 January 1939.
Re-enlisting on 31 July 1939, Hopwood was posted to the destroyer Arrow and was with her off the Norwegian Coast in 1940 when she was rammed by the German trawler Schleswig. He certainly remained with her through the evacuation of Norway and her time on the Western Approaches but his services record does not make clear whether he joined her in the Mediterranean. Hopwood was finally discharged on 13 November 1945 as a result of heart problems, and his Second World War service entitles him to several stars as well as the War Medal 1939-45.
