1914-15 Star (J.28784, A. J. Hyland. A.B., R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (J 28784 A. J. Hyland. A.B. R.N.); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (J28784 J. Hyland. A.B. H.M.S. Furious.), mounted court-style for display, pitting, contact marks, polished, fine and better (4)

Alfred James Hyland was born at Worthing, Sussex on 21 February 1896 and was an errand boy when he joined the service in February 1914. He joined the M-class destroyer Ophelia six days before the Battle of Jutland and served with her until 29 March 1919.

Ophelia was an Admiralty M-class destroyer built for the Royal Navy during the First World War, entering service in 1916. The ship served at Jutland, and on 10 September 1918 sunk the German U-boat UB-83.

Remaining in service at the conclusion of the Great War, Hyland was serving on the aircraft carrier Furious in 1929 when he received his L.S. & G.C. medal. Promoted to Leading Seaman in May 1934, he was shore pensioned in February 1936 but recalled for service in February 1938, serving with Vernon and St. Angelo. It is not known whether he was serving on her when she struck a mine at Malta in May 1942.

Hyland was eventually released from service in September 1945; sold together with copied service papers.
