Four: Able Seaman F. George, Royal Navy, who served aboard H.M.S. Hercules at the Battle of Jutland

Frank George was born at Tenterden, Kent on 11 January 1899 and was an agricultural labourer when he joined the Royal Navy in December 1914 as a Boy 1st Class. He was posted to Hercules in January 1915 and remained with her until May 1918.

Hercules was a 'Colossus Class' battleship in the 6th Division of the 1st Battle Squadron at Jutland. She engaged enemy battlecruisers from 19.00-19.15, achieving hits with her fifth and sixth salvoes. Hercules fired 98 rounds from her main armament during the whole engagement. She was straddled and hit by splinters but sustained no damage or casualties.

George was discharged invalided with tuberculosis on 5 May 1937. He died at Ashford, Kent in July 1961; sold together with copied service papers.
