The First World War trio awarded to Captain W. A. Lloyd, Royal Navy
1914-15 Star (Payr. W. A. Lloyd, R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (Payr. Lt. Cr. W. A. Lloyd. R.N.), mounted as worn, very fine (3)
William Augustus Lloyd was born on 7 April 1885 and entered the Royal Navy as an Assistant Clerk on 15 July 1902, passing for Clerk exactly one year later on 15 July 1903. He was promoted Paymaster on 19 July 1912; Staff Paymaster on 17 April 1916; Paymaster Commander on 7 April 1924 and was retired as Paymaster Captain on 7 April 1935. During the First World War, Lloyd was serving aboard the 'Arethusa'-class light cruiser H.M.S. Penelope when she was struck by a torpedo from a German U-boat off the coast of Norfolk on 25 April 1916. The damage, however, was not severe and after repairs she was reassigned to the Grand Fleet.
After the War, Lloyd was posted to the H.M.S. Fox in the East Indies, and upon his return to Britain in 1919 was married to Florence Ethel May on 10 November. On 30 May 1930 he took up an appointment as Cashier of the Royal Naval Hospital Malta and managed much of the hospital administrative duties. He relinquished this commission on 24 August 1933, after which he returned to England and worked on a number of shore appointments prior to being placed on the retired list having reached the upper age limit. Throughout his service, Lloyd was repeatedly describing as hard-working, capable and efficient. He died just two years after being placed on the retired list on 11 January 1937 at the age of 52.
