George Pitt was born at Shoeburyness, Essex on 4 May 1877 and was a blacksmith upon joining the Royal Navy in September 1896. During the Great War, he served in a number of vessels before joining H.M.S. Diligence (for service in H.M.S. Nonsuch) in February 1916 and stayed with her until February 1917.
On 30 May, Nonsuch sailed with the Grand Fleet forming part of the Second Division of the Flotilla that included sister ship Menace. Nonsuch was deployed in action against the German light cruisers Frankfurt and Pillau. However, as the destroyers manoeuvred, the cruisers attacked Menace and Nonsuch, which were at the rear of the Flotilla. Nonsuch, veering swiftly to avoid being hit, lost touch with the remainder of the Flotilla. Shortly afterwards, the vessel encountered the destroyer Acasta, previously damaged in the engagement, and towed the stricken ship back to Aberdeen, arriving on 2 June.
Pitt was shore pensioned in March 1919; sold together with copied service papers and a registered Admiralty envelope.
