1914 Star, clasp (A. M. Ware. B.R.C.S. & O. St. J. J.); British War and Victory Medals (A. M. Ware. B.R.C.S. & O. St. J. J.), mounted as worn, sold together with corresponding miniatures and a British Red Cross Society enamelled badge, engraved to '177 Arthur M. Ware', good very fine (3)

Arthur Maitland Ware was born in 1874 and was educated at Haileybury and Pembroke College, Cambridge. Qualifying in medicine, he onetime served as a Surgeon Lieutenant in the 14th Middlesex (Inns of Court) Regiment and practised for many years in South Kensington, London.

In September 1914, having signed an agreement with the British Red Cross and Order of St. John, he was embarked for France for services as a Medical Officer and Civil Surgeon in the Rouen No. 3 Unit, where he remained employed until January 1915.

Dr. Ware, who gave up much of his time for voluntary service, was appointed an Officer of the Order of St. John in January 1925 and a Knight of Justice in June 1939. He died in Guildford in January 1953 and his correspondence for the period 1895-1946 is held by the Surrey History Centre; sold with copied research.
