Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Cape Colony, Wittebergen (90499 Dr H. C. Allen, 5th Bty: R.F.A.), light contact marks, very fine

Herbert Charles Allen was born at Statton, Dorchester, Dorset in 1892 and attested at Birmingham on 26 May 1892. He transferred to the 42nd Battery in India on 11 March 1893 and served there for a year before returning to Britain on 13 November 1894 and was posted to South Africa in December.

Whilst there, he joined the 83rd Battery in April 1895 and finally was posted to the10th Battery in May 1899. He was still with them upon the opening of the Anglo-Boer War, at some stage transferring to the 5th Battery. Returning to Britain on 1 November 1902, Allen served there until he died in service of a cerebral haemorrhage on 24 September 1907.
