Norman Yates was born at Bardsley, Lancashire on 3 November 1880 and enlisted into the Royal Army Medical Corps on 26 November 1901. Posted to South Africa from 30 December 1901-6 December 1902 he was discharged on 12 December 1902.
Re-enlisting for Great War service in the Canadian Army Medical Corps on 22 April 1916 at Dibgate Camp, Hythe, Kent he briefly saw service in France in 1918. Yates' his service life appears to have been blighted with Pleurisy, Tuberculosis and Pneumonia, he was finally discharged on 7 October 1919; sold together with his uniform riband bar.
