Three: Acting Corporal W. A. Attrill, Army Service Corps, who as a veteran of the Boer War and who saw service in East Africa, Belgium and Germany during the Great War

William Arthur Attrill was born in 1881 at Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight. Enlisting in the Royal Berkshire Regiment at Parkhurst, Isle of Wight on 12 December 1899 he requested an immediate transfer to the Army Service Corps. Embarking with them for South Africa on 18 April 1900 he disembarked on 5 May 1900. Attrill served there for much of the campaign but was discharged as medically unfit on 4 December 1901.

Finding civilian work as a Baker at Westfield, Woking after the war he returned to the colours on the outbreak of the Great War. Joining the Special Reserve at Guildford for the Army Service Corps with number S/2SR 01496. Attrill embarked for East Africa on 6 February 1916, before transferring to South Africa on 16 January 1917.

Returning to the U.K. on 12 April 1917 his status was re-classified on account of disability to Class 2 on account of deafness, otherwise fit. He reverting to Private on transfer (to another unit in the A.S.C.) on 7 March 1918 he returned to service in Belgium on 30 March. After the war he was part of the army of occupation in Germany as a 'Railhead Issuer' and Returned to the U.K. on 7 March 1919.

Transferred to the Class Z Reserve on 4 April 1919 Attrill wrote to the officer Commanding R.A.S.C. at Aldershot in response to notice in newspaper requesting volunteers for the Armies of Occupation. In turn he was sent a rail warrant to travel from the Isle of Wight to Aldershot on 2 May 1919. Attesting again as a volunteer for 1 year under AO55 1919, he was considered fit to be a storekeeper or Baker or for clerical duties in any theatre of operations. Attrill embarked for North Russia on 1 August 1919, being promoted Acting Corporal while there on 10 September. Embarking for the U.K. on 8 October 1919 he arrived on the seven days later and was finally discharged on 12 November 1919.
