Walter Tracy Gray was born at Montreal 5 September 1878 and worked as a Stock Keeper before enlisting with Brabant's Horse and being posted to South Africa on 9 July 1901. He was to serve there until 6 July 1902 before returning to Canada. He was to return to the colours during the Great War, attesting on 25 March 1916.
Arriving in Britain aboard the S.S. Laconia he was posted to the 14th (Royal Montreal) Battalion, Canadian Infantry in France on 29 November 1916. Present for the Battalion's participation at Vimy Ridge in the Spring of 1917 Gray was gassed in November 1917. His Medical Records state:
'Gassed at Passchendaele No. 1917 Treated at No 8. Stat. Hosp. Boulogne 3 weeks in hospital and then sent to convalescent home for 2 weeks.
Shrapnel Wound in back and Fractured 11th rib as result. Amiens - Aug. 9 1918. Treated at No. 1 South African Gen. Hosp. at Abbeville for 10 days and then sent to England to Middlesex County War Hospital.'
This second wound saw Grey through until October 1918 and he was not long in service before being demobilised at Montreal on 20 January 1919; sold together with copied service papers.
