Enlisting for Great War service on 4 January 1916, he embarked at Halifax on 15 August 1916, arriving in Liverpool on 24 August.
Promoted Lance Corporal on 24 August 1916, he however reverted to Private on 1 November 1916 as to proceed overseas which he did on 14 November 1916.
He was taken on the strength of the 46th Battalion the following day, he was killed in action on 13 February 1917 and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial.
An extract from the War Diary states the action in which Private Baldry goes missing and is later considered killed in action:
'At 3.15.a.m, this morning "A" "B" "C" and "D" Coys were in position in Arras Alley, Bajollie Switch, and Ablain St. Nazaire standing to, less the party employed with the raiding Company. Zero hour was at 4.a.m, and at that hour an intense bombardment was opened up by our Artillery and Trench Mortars. Our joint operation with the 44th, 47th, and 50th Battalions were successful in reaching objectives, and raid resulted in much more valuable information being obtained - such as the fact that the 11th. Bavarian Regiment were against us, also in the damage done to enemy dugouts, and mine shafts in addition to the capture of over forty prisoners, and about ten wounded.'
