George Wells was born in Stepney, London, and served briefly with the 5th (Militia) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers prior to enlisting into the King's Own Scottish Borderers on 18 April 1891. Posted to India from 24 January 1893-14 February 1899, he returned to Britain but was soon ordered to South Africa.
Arriving in the country on 4 January 1900 he was present at Waterval Drift the next month when De Wett launched an enormous ambush with a commando of 1,000 men. Wells was wounded in the fighting but managed to avoid the great round up of prisoners which occurred there. Returning to on 27 June 1902 he was discharged on 17 April 1903.
