Thomas Farrow was born at Norwich, Norfolk in 1867 and attested at Great Yarmouth on 16 February 1885. He was twice posted to Gibraltar between 1885-1887, seeing almost two years of service there before being ordered to India on 11 February 1889.

He was stationed there near the border with Burma during the Chin Hills revolt of 1892 when the Chin rose against the British. Troops were drafted in from the local villages in an emergency response including 200 men of the Norfolk Regiment, including Farrow.

He returned to Britain on 27 February 1895 and was posted to the Army Reserve, being discharged entirely in 1897. Returning to the colours on the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War, Farrow entered the war in South Africa on 4 January 1900, seeing action quickly at Paardeberg. He remained there until 12 February 1902, arriving in Britain and being demobilised in little over a fortnight on 28 February.
