Henry Elliot Potham was born at Devonport, Devon on 5 January 1849, the son of Henry and Ann Potham. Enlisting with H.M.S. Amazon on 2 May 1866 as Warrant Officer's Servant. Transferring to H.M.S. Star on 23 October he served there as W. R. O. Servant (likely Ward Room Officer's Servant). Whilst he was stationed with her the sloop took part in the transport arrangements for the Abyssinia campaign, earning her crew a medal.
Potham finally left her on 10 October 1870 for the frigate Inconstant where he served as gunroom servant. His service records transferred for the first time on 2 December 1872 when he joined the crew of Topaze.
