Note the recipient is named 'P Odell' on the roll however his surname and number relate to the service papers of 'J Odell'.
John Odell was born at Hillingdon, Middlesex and enlisted with the 15th Hussars on 30 October 1889 with the service number 2702. Transferred to the 11th Hussars in 1892 he saw service in India from January 1893 he was then posted to the Army Reserve on 15 February 1898.
Returning to the colours from service in the Anglo-Boer War Odell entered the war in South Africa on 20 February 1900. He served attached to the 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) during this period. This unit was particularly heavily engaged in Transvaal from late 1900, initially under General French and later under Allenby. Returning to Britain in 1902 he soon returned to the Reserve and from there was discharged.
Rallying once more to the colours on the outbreak of the Great War Odell found himself posted to a cavalry deport in Britain for the first half of the conflict with the number 13945. Joining the 12th Reserve Regiment in March 1916 he served until January 1917 when he returned to the Reserve and was discharged in 1919; sold together with copied service papers and medal roll.
