One of 568 Ashantee 1873-74 medals issued to H.M.S. Active.

William Maples was born at London on 4 March 1850, he is noted as joining 'Reserve' in 1873, as there was no ship of this name in service at the time it is likely this refers to the Royal Naval Reserve. He served intermittently throughout 1873, being twice stationed ashore at a Naval Barracks and spending 1 September -11 December with H.M.S. Duncan. Maples was posted to Active on 30 December 1873 and served with her until 1 September 1874. After the end of the Ashantee Campaign Maples was discharged as invalided; sold together with copied service record.
