1864 "Eagles" Issue
Mexico District 3c. Brown, 5th Period, consignment 55-1865, excellent impression and bright color, cancelled and with enormous margins on all sides. In 1865-66, only 2,403 stamps were issued as a trial for local city mail, with just 300 allocated from this particular consignment. Maybe about fifteen may exist exhibiting a cancellation from all consignments. On outstandingly fine example of this very rare stamp. MEPSI certificate. Scott 18, $3,250.
Note: While most stamps saw postal use, many remain uncanceled, as they were deposited in special mailboxes. Only those brought directly to the post office received a cancellation.
