1864 "Eagles" Issue
Mexico District 3c. Brown, 4th Period, consignment 71-1865, cancelled with c.d.s. and with small margins. This stamp was issued as an experiment for local city mail in 1865-66, with only 2,403 issued, including just 200 from this consignment. An exceptionally sought-after piece and an essential piece of classic Mexico, being one of the likely fifteen known examples from any consignment that received an actual cancellation. 2023 MEPSI certificate. Scott 18, $3,250.
Note: The exceptional scarcity of cancelled examples arises from the fact that most letters bearing this stamp, when deposited in city mailboxes, were typically left uncanceled, except for those presented directly at the post office.
