Auction: 24033 - The "KMC" Collection of Stamps and Covers of Mexico
Lot: 84
(x) Mexico
1856 Issue
Zacatecas Manuscript Overprint ½r. Blue, strip of four with margins varying from complete to ample, just very slightly cut into at top left, affixed to a pristine cover originating from Fresnillo, with excellent cancellations. The cover was either taken privately or sent via the mail service to Aguascalientes, where it was posted and cancelled for onward transmission. This legendary showpiece is one of only two recorded covers, showcasing the largest known multiple of this provisional. While we have not seen the other known cover, the outstanding state of preservation of the cover presented here is noteworthy; it was sold for $16,000 at the 2000 Regency auction (lot #5575). MEPSI certificate. Scott 1; NF $10,000 as single stamps off cover.
Note: When Zacatecas was about to be taken by the Conservatives, the postmaster left the city and moved temporarily to Aguascalientes. He brought the stamps with him but not the overprinting device, so all the stamps had to be overprinted manually. Only fourteen stamps have been recorded, including two strips of four known on cover.
