1843 "Bulls Eyes
Rio de Janeiro (RJ). 30r. black, clear to large margins, with part of frame line of neighbouring stamp at base, tied to piece by Rio dispatch c.d.s. at left and, at right, the exceptional "correio geral da corte/entra da." circular handstamp with crown (Ayres 1640). The only example known of this cancellation on "Bull's Eyes", of much greater importance by being one of just two recorded usages of an official mail cancel in this issue, further enhanced by exhibiting a use in red. RHM 1. Photo

Note: Cancellations used for official correspondence are seldom seen on the second and third issues, but on the "Bull's Eyes", it appears to be unique. In his catalogue, Paulo Ayres lists 1844 as the first year of this official cancel, but with this example, 1843 can be established.
