1843 "Bulls Eyes"
The Unique Insured or Registered "Bull's Eyes" Cover in Sound Condition

Rio de Janeiro. 60r. black, early impression, good to large margins, used on back of entire letter from Rio de Janeiro to Serro, tied by "correio geral da corte" dispatch c.d.s. on 16 September 1843, featuring an infrequent early usage on a letter after this issue began circulating on August 1st. Endorsed in manuscript with "Segura" at the lower right on the front, indicating postal insurance service, and "Pg Seg° 800 Reis" at the top right, signifying the 800 réis paid in cash for the insurance fee, while the 60r. stamp covered the single overland rate. One of only two insured or registered covers recorded from the "Bull's Eyes", which is among the most significant issues in worldwide philately. The other cover bears a 30r. and 90r. franking, with the 90r. stamp repaired. This single-franking cover is uniquely distinguished by the manuscript indication of the amount paid in cash. A great gem of this issue. RHM 2. Photo

Note: This letter explicitly states the cash payment, while the other cover lacks this indication and its franking paid the single maritime rate only. This characteristic and the good condition makes this single-franking cover the most important of the two known from a postal insurance or registration perspective.
