Lot: 69
British Guiana
1850-51 "Cottonreels"
The "Hind" and "Dale Lichtenstein" 4 Cents on Pelure Paper
4c. black on pale yellow on pelure paper Type A, initialled "W.H.L.", cut approximately square with huge margins, on piece lightly cancelled by Demerara double-arc d.s. with another strike alongside clearly dated 2 March 1851; a few light wrinkles (appropriate to a pelure paper and of no significance in this instance) and a variation in the paper colour caused by a varying effect of the gum on the whiteness of the paper. A great rarity of the British Empire, with only sixteen recorded examples of this stamp in private hands, including two on cover-, six of which are cut square, and four of which have complete margins, making this one of the best in terms of margins.
