Charles I (1625-1649), Contemporary Forgery of a Group E, Type 4, Shilling, concocted Summer 1639 - Summer 1640, in the style of Tower (under King), (triangle) CAROLVS • D G .' MAG • BRI : FRAN • ET HI • REX • cruder crowned bust left in the fourth and sixth portrait style, wearing falling lace collar, larger XII behind, rev. (m.m.) • CHRISTO • AVSPICE • REGNO • square-topped shield over cross moline with large fleurs, scroll-top harp with five strings, 4.631g [71.467grns], 12h, m.m. triangle / anchor (cf. Brooker 1204), trace porosity to otherwise lustrous and unevenly cabinet toned fields, of accomplished style albeit of inferior weight, struck details very fine, a fascinating piece of 17th Century Socio-Numismatic commentary
