Charles I (1625-1649), Contemporary Forgery of a Group E, Type 4, Shilling, concocted from Summer 1639, in sterling silver, • CAROLVS • DG • MA • BR • FR • ET • HIB • REX • cruder crowned and armoured bust left, wearing falling lace collar, 'ladder' design on near shoulder, XII behind, rev. (m.m.) • CHRISTO • AVSPICE • REGNO • square-topped shield, scroll-topped harp with five strings, 4.694g [72.439grns], 11h, [Spink XRF: 94.00% Ar], m.m. anchor with rounded flukes (Hawkins Type 17; cf. Brooker 1207), a 19th Century Pawnbroker's mark above shield, otherwise of unusually good fabric for a contemporary forgery, severely under-weight, but of accomplished style hence its previous attribution and intrigue as a possible official issue, lustrous and uniform, a pleasingly good very fine, and once proudly owned by legendary numismatist Hyman Montagu
