Charles I (1625-1649), Group E, Type 4, Shillings, 8 May 1638 - 4 July 1639, Tower (under King), m.m. anchor (3), type 4.1 <variety, (m.m.) CAROLVS • D .' G .' MA .' BR .' FR .' ET • HI .' REX fifth crowned and armoured "bust 3" left, wearing falling lace collar, medium XII behind, with rounded shoulder, rev. (m.m.) • CHRISTO • AVSPICE • REGNO • square-topped shield over cross moline, plain harp with five strings, 6.024g, 11h, m.m. anchor [flukes to right] (Brooker 526; Sharp F5/1; North 2230; S.2797), richly cabinet toned with colourful highlights, very fine; another, similar, type 4.3, but bust narrower still, 5.796g, 3h, m.m. anchor [upright / flukes to right] (Brooker 521; Sharp F3/1; North 2229; S.2796), overt die breaks behind head and rubbed quite smooth, otherwise good / a bolder fine; lastly, similar to last, but pyx mark reversed, 6.097g, 2h, m.m. anchor [flukes to left] (Brooker -, cf. 515-521; Sharp F3/1; North 2229; S.2796), residually lustrous and attractively cabinet toned with purplish hues, about very fine, the reverse variety unknown to Brooker, scarce thus (3)
