Charles I (1625-1649), Group D, Type 3.1, Shilling, 11 July 1633 - 27 June 1634, Tower (under King), (m.m.) • CAROLVS D .' G .' MA .' BR .' FR .' ET • HI .' REX, smaller fourth crowned and armoured bust left, wearing falling lace collar, XII behind, rev. (m.m.) • CHRISTO • AVSPICE • REGNO •:• oval-garnished shield, dividing C-R across field, plain harp, 5.889g, 11h, m.m. portcullis (Hawkins 514; Brooker 483/482 same dies; Sharp D4/1; North 2223; S.2789), rubbed but largely full with hints of underlying neon-blue tone and lustre, strictly fine, but interesting as this obverse die known to have been paired with an 'inverted cypher' reverse - a reminder of the illiteracy or perhaps an expression of political grievance towards this divisive Royal person; additionally, Group D, Sixpences, Type 3a, Tower (under King) (2), 21 June 1632 - 11 July 1633, Tower (under King), similar to last, CAROLVS D .' G .' MAG .' BRI .' FR .' ET • HI .' REX• (m.m.) • VI behind, all within inner circle, rev. as before, ornate harp, 2.757g, 4h, m.m. harp (Brooker 604-607; North 2240; S.2811), lightly creased where once love-tokened, otherwise darkly and colourfully cabinet toned with underlying lustre to reverse, scarcely fine, but the shield better; lastly, 11 July 1633 - 27 June 1634, legend as first, medium bust with jewelled arches to crown, rev. scroll-top harp, 3.035g, 3h, m.m. portcullis (Brooker -, cf. 609-612; North 2240; S.2811), die break through back of head up to crown, and partial striking softness to shield, otherwise residually lustrous, a pleasing very fine, rare (3)
