Elizabeth I (1558-1603), First Issue, Halfgroat, 1 January 1559 - Spring 1560, Tower, (m.m.) ELIZABETH : D .' G .' ANG .' FRA .' Z HIB .' RE .' wire-line inner circle only, crowned and draped bust 1G left, rev. (m.m.) POSVI DEV .' AD-IVTOR-EM • MEV, wire-line inner circle only, square-topped shield over long cross fourchée, 0.815g, 11h, m.m. lys (BCW LS-1B/LS-a; North 1987; S.2552), crimped and lightly pecked, otherwise residually lustrous with traces of bluish tone, strictly fine or marginally bolder, but very rare and probably only known from a singular die pairing; additionally, Second Issue, Halfgroats (2), 1 January 1561 - 24 October 1561, similar, reading... AN .' FR .' ET • HI .' REGINA, beaded inner-circles only, bust 3F left, rev. POSVI DEV .' AD-IVTORE-M : MEV .' as before, 0.879g, 9h, m.m. cross-crosslet (BCW CC-3/CC-b4; North 1987; S.2557), small flan split at 10 o'clock, otherwise crimped but richly cabinet toned on obverse, the reverse brighter with blue peripheral toning, a bolder fine, scarce; lastly, 1 December 1560 - 24 October 1561, as last, 0.933g, 8h, m.m. martlet (BCW MR-1H/MR-a2; North 1987; S.2557), rubbed and residually lustrous, but richly cabinet toned, centres fine, the peripheries bolder still, scarce; an important group of early Elizabethan issues (3)
