Edward I (1272-1307), 'Longcross' Pennies (9), Durham (3), Class 2b, 1281, Bishop de Insula, EDW R ANGL DNS hYB, reverse-barred N, crowned bust facing, drapery in two parts, rev. CIVITAS DVREME, long cross and trio of pellets in angles, 1.298g, 11h (S.1422 [1386 for type]), cabinet toned, very fine; another, Class 4b, 1282-1289, Bishop Bec, rev. (m.m.) CIV | ITAS | DVR | EME, as last, 1.287g [19.861grns], 5h, m.m. cross moline (North 1024; S.1423 [1395 for type]), crimped and colourfully retoned, otherwise scarcely fair, but a quirkier issue of this iconic high medieval staple specie; another, Class 9b1, 1299-1301, Bishop Bec, no star on breast, 1.275g, 7h, i.m. cross moline [on obverse only] (North 1037/1; S.1423 [1408 for type]), surfaces fouled and heavily circulated, mediocre; also, Exeter, Class 9b2, 1299-1301, star on breast, fleurs with straight sides, rev. CIVITAS EXONIE, 1.385g, 8h (North 1037/2; S.1425 [1408 for type]), slightly crimped, otherwise cabinet toned, nearing very fine, a single-class type for this mint; additionally, Kingston-upon-Hull, Class 9b1, 1299-1301, five-pointed star on breast, rev. VILL KYNCESTON, long cross and trio of pellets in angles, 1.336g, 4h (North 1037/1; S.1426 [1408 for type]), the reverse a trace off-struck, otherwise rich dark cabinet tone, about very fine, a scarce and popular Yorkist issue of the Longshanks era; another, Lincoln, Class 3cd, 1280-1281, rev. CIVITAS LINCOL', 1.231g, 4h (North 1019; S.1427 [1390 for type]), creased and stress market, otherwise toned, almost very fine; others (3), Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Class 9b1, 1299-1301, star on breast, rev. VILL NOVI CASTRI, 1.403g, 8h (North 1037/1; S.1428 [1408 for type]), toned, good fine; another, Class 9b1/10ab Mule, c. 1301, 1.364g, 2h (North 1037/1039; S.1428 [1408/1409 for type]), rubbed largely flat on obverse, the reverse with redeeming rainbow cabinet tone suggestive of an old hoard provenance, only good / fine; lastly, Class 10ab, c. 1301, reading EDWARD R ANGL DNS hYB, crowned bust facing, but an evidently incomplete puncheon as the portrait lacks ears or hair, 1.451g [22.392grns], 10h (Hawkins -; North 1039; S.1428 [1409 for type]), a coin that evidently confounded our numismatic forebears, not least for ascribing it incorrectly to the reign of Edward II, but equally for its 'incomplete' portrait of Longshanks, richly cabinet toned, almost very fine, and presumably rare (9)
