The L'Abbaye Collection: Part Two | George I (1714-1727), 'Roses and Plumes ERROR' Shilling, 1721 over 18 [or 19 ?], GEORGIVS • D ' G • M • BR • FR • ET • HIB • REX • F • D • first laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. 21 • BRVN ET • L • DVX S • R • I • A : TH • ET • EL • 17, crowned shields cruciform, seven strings to harp, six hearts to semée, roses and plumes in wrong order in angles (P-R-P-R, from 2nd quarter clockwise), edge obliquely milled, 6h (Bateman 527 = Hughes 337 this coin; Pywell-Phillips -; ESC 1171A [R4]; Bull 1580 [R4] this coin illustrated; S.3645), the faintest flecking on throat and die cud in first quarter of reverse, otherwise an exquisitely balanced-for-strike, lustrous and handsomely cabinet toned specimen of this iconic Georgian rarity, a really pleasingly good very fine, A GREAT RARITY, and the first offered in these rooms for almost a decade and this surely among the finest known for type

A surprisingly modern addition to the Shilling corpus, being as recently documented as 'unrecorded' in our sale (Spink 140, 16 November 1999, lot 665. That same specimen would return to cross our block in a Gentleman's Collection of English Milled Rarities in the Winter of 2017 (6 December 2017, lot 327). The bigger mystery is the host date for this variety, as no unaltered date die is presently known for 1718 or 1719 to explain the creation of the overdate. From close examination, it would appear that 1718 was the more likely candidate at the present juncture however.
