The L'Abbaye Collection: Part Two | Charles II (1660-1685), Shilling, 1683, CAROLVS • II • - DEI • GRATIA, second laureate and draped bust right, no stop before DEI or after GRATIA, rev. no stop after HIB but before MAG, crowned shields cruciform, five strings to harp, interlocking Cs in angles, edge obliquely milled, 6h (Woodhouse 347; Pywell-Phillips 71; Bull 557 [R6]; ESC 1064 [R6]; S.3375), waterworn, porous and lightly polished with an unsightly metal flaw before nose and trace porosity to brighter fields, otherwise uniformly struck for type, only fair / a bolder fine, but an excessively rare date, perhaps only a handful known, and consequently one of the most sought-after Shilling 'key dates' of the reign
