Provenance

The L'Abbaye Collection of Early Milled Shillings: Part Two

M Rasmussen, by private treaty, 6 September 2003

Rasmussen FPL 5, Summer 2003, no. 153* - "extremely rare, fair-fine" - £400

Myron Kaufman, portion of collection dispersed by Rasmussen, 2003

Archbishop Sharp, Baldwin-Glendining, 5 October 1977, lot 171* - "fair, an excessively rare date"

Historically rated by ESC as R7, the rating was lowered following the salvage of an example from the wreck of the HMS Association (Glendining, 24 March 1977, lot 441); and again (Glendining, 11-12 July 1979, lot 189*). This would be the example that subsequently reappeared in our room as part of the Pywell-Phillips (Spink 257, 30-31 October 2018, lot 71) and indeed L'Abbaye (Part One, 7 July 2021, lot 251), sales. However, the present specimen has an even more illustrious history having descended from the cabinet of Archbishop John Sharp (1645-1714), whose predilection to collect coins from within his own lifetime results in an extraordinary group of 17th Century specie effectively untouched since circulation three centuries ago. One can almost envisage the moment Sharp encountered this coin on his travels and rescued it for its extreme rarity, even then!
