(x) Four: Lance-Corporal G. Hay, 3/1st Lothians & Border Horse (Yeomanry), late Royal Horse Guards, who acted as servant to Lord Benning on the Western Front from November 1916

George Hay was born at St Stephens, Edinburgh and joined the Royal Horse Guards at Hyde Park Barracks on 29 November 1889. He was imprisoned for 168 hours in January 1895 for using improper language to a superior officer. Entering the Anglo-Boer War in South Africa on 29 November 1899 he served there until 28 November 1900 before returning to Britain and seeing out the rest his service at home, being discharged on 25 May 1908
He re-enlisted into the Lothian and Border Horse on 4 August 1914 at Edinburgh and entered the war in France as Lance-Corporal on 27 September 1915 with the 3/1st Lothians & Border Horse. He was attached to the 1st Mounted Brigade (Essex) as servant to Lord Benning from November 1916. Finishing the Great War and as a Private he was discharged on 14 February 1919 as a result of an impairment he had suffered since rejoining.
