James Martin enlisted at Greenock on 24 November 1914. He first served overseas as part of the British Expeditionary Force on 24 May 1915 serving with the 1st Battalion and was wounded on 12 July 1917 at Ypres with gunshot wounds to the left leg, left forearm and right thumb. He returned Home on 17 July 1917 and was discharged on 21 November 1918 with a Silver War Badge (B47566).
