Henry Kenneth Foster was born on 11 January 1880, being married to Mabel in June 1900. He worked out in Shanghai as the Clerk of Works and was also admitted to the Doric Lodge of Freemasons in 1911.
During the Great War, he first served with the Nigeria Regiment (West African Frontier Force), attached to their HQ Staff, in the Cameroons (Theatre Code 4C) from 19 September 1914. Foster thence served with the Royal Marine Engineers and the Royal Engineers (Inland Waterways & Docks). He clearly returned to West Africa, as he returned to Liverpool from Lagos in July 1920, intending to stay at Howards Hotel, Margate.
