James Albert Bain was born at Perambore, Madras on 23 April 1875 and was baptised on 15 June 1875. He began his career with the railways in India serving with the North-Western Railway as a Guard and then with the Oudh and Rohilkand Railway. He returned to Britain on leave but returned to Bombay leaving on the Egypt on 30 July 1903. He was awarded a Delhi Durbar 1911 medal from the Great Indian Peninsular Railway Company and was further awarded his Volunteer Force L.S. & G.C. on 30 August 1915. Married on 8 December 1915 to Lizette Gertrude Zincke at All Saints' Church, Lonavla, Bombay. Bain was initiated into the Bhore Ghaut Lodge at Lonavla on 4 January 1919. He became an Undertaker and monumental Mason towards the end of his life. He died on 6 October 1942 and was buried the following day at St Sepulchre's Cemetery, Poona, India, leaving an estate of Rs 26,350-0-0.
