Francois Johannes Diederik Furstenburg was from Zeerus and served in the Marico Kommando during the Second Boer War as a Veldkornet (Field Officer). He shared in the actions at Roodwal, Ysterspruit and Tweebosch on 7 March 1902 - between Hartsrivier and the Klein-Hartsrivier - when involved in the infamous capture of Paul Methuen, 3rd Baron Methuen's Convoy (noted on his 'Form B'). Having broken his leg in the sharp Battle, Boer General Koos de la Rey released him due to the severity of his injuries, providing his personal cart to take Methuen to the hospital in Klerksdorp. The two allegedly became lifelong friends as a result of this action.
