South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (50/37 Pte W. J. Stevans. 57th Foot.), light edge brusing and contact marks, very fine
W.J. Stevans is confirmed upon the roll as W. J. Stevens with entitlement to this Medal and clasp. The 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot was part of Lord Chelmsford's relief column travelling to Eshowe to relieve the under-seige troops of Colonel Pearson’s No. One Column. While en route, they were attacked by thousands of Zulus at the Battle of Gingindlovu on 2 April 1879. The British were victorious, after which they successfully lifted the seige.
